Should Newcastle Keep Tonali or Bruno? The Abnswer May Already Be Clear

By Katerina K.

Bruno or Tonali?

If Newcastle United were ever forced into a choice between Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimarães, many supporters would argue the answer is clear.

Bruno has been central to everything Newcastle have built in recent seasons. His leadership, consistency and connection with the fanbase make him far more than just a key player. For that reason, if one were to leave, it would likely make more sense for it to be Tonali.

Transfer Noise Is Growing

Recent reports have only intensified that discussion.

Journalist Craig Hope has suggested that Manchester United could make a move for Tonali, while Fabrizio Romano has described the midfielder as a priority target and indicated that interested clubs are pushing hard behind the scenes.

Whether or not a deal materialises, the level of noise around Tonali’s future is clearly growing.

A Strategic Exit?

From the club’s perspective, there is also a wider question to consider.

Tonali is approaching what could be seen as peak market value. Selling at the right time is part of modern squad management, and Newcastle may decide that reinvesting a significant fee could strengthen multiple areas of the squad.

There are also longer-term uncertainties. Tonali has been open about his connection to Italy, and questions may remain over whether he sees his future in the Premier League indefinitely. Clubs must also think carefully about squad stability and risk over time.

A Question of Respect

However, the tone of the current situation is what leaves some supporters uncomfortable.

Newcastle stood firmly behind Tonali during one of the most difficult periods of his career. The club offered support, patience and stability, while the fans backed him throughout.

Against that backdrop, the constant flow of headlines and speculation can feel difficult to accept. Even if much of it comes from external sources, the situation inevitably raises questions about how the club is being viewed.

Ultimately, Newcastle may make a strategic decision based on football and finances. But for many supporters, there remains a sense that the way this situation is developing does not fully reflect the backing Tonali has received.
