Predicted Starting XI

Goalkeeper: Ramsdale

Defence: Trippier Thiaw Burn Hall

Midfield: RamseyTonali Joelinton

Attack: Murphy Gordon Barnes

Gordon to Lead the Line

With Woltemade reportedly dealing with a bug, it is difficult to see him being risked. Even if he were available, match sharpness would be a concern.

Wissa’s recent performances have not inspired confidence either. He looks short of rhythm and not fully fit, and in a game of this magnitude Newcastle need intensity from the first minute.

As for Osula, he simply does not look ready yet. There is potential there, but throwing him into a high pressure clash against Manchester United could do more harm than good at this stage.

All signs point to Anthony Gordon leading the line. It is not his natural role long term, but Howe has trusted him there before. His pressing, aggression and willingness to run in behind can unsettle defenders, especially in big games where space opens up in transition.

Midfield Steel Returns

A trio of Ramsey, Tonali and Joelinton provides balance.

Tonali dictates tempo from deep, Joelinton adds physical presence and defensive bite, while Ramsey offers drive and forward movement. Against Manchester United’s midfield, Newcastle will need control and intensity, and this three man unit offers both.

Defensive Stability

Trippier and Hall provide width from full back, while Thiaw and Burn give strength centrally. It is not flashy, but it is solid.

This feels like a selection based on trust. Trust in experience. Trust in work rate. Trust in structure.

If Newcastle are to get a result, it will likely come from organisation, energy and clinical moments in transition. A familiar 4 3 3 with Gordon spearheading the attack may be the clearest path forward.
