Match Report - Newcastle United 2-1 Manchester United

Will Osula’s late goal gave Newcastle United all three points against Manchester United at St James’ Park in the Premier League.

Jacob Ramsey was sent off before any goals were scored after he received two yellow cards with the latter coming in the first minute of additional time in the first half. The second card caused an uproar in 'the cathedral on the hill', as he was dismissed for diving.

Two minutes later, Newcastle were awarded a penalty when Anthony Gordon sprinted into the box and was tripped - Gordon converted from the spot to give the hosts the lead.

In similar fashion to the previous game against Everton, Manchester United responded almost immediately after Newcastle scored - Bruno Fernandes whipped a ball towards Casemiro at the near post, and it went past Aaron Ramsdale in goal.

'winner'

Newcastle found a late winner in the 90th minute when Osula’s outrageous strike curled into the left side of the goal, leaving Senne Lammens in shock as St James’ Park erupted once again.

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe had made two changes from the Magpies’ 3–2 home defeat by Everton last time out, with Nick Woltemade missing through injury. Harvey Barnes came in with Anthony Gordon playing through the middle. Aaron Ramsdale replaced Nick Pope between the hosts’ sticks.

Boyhood ‘Magpie’ and Wallsend native Michael Carrick had been looking to become just the third Manchester United manager to remain unbeaten in his first 10 league games, after Herbert Bamlett in 1927 and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2018–19, when he went into the match.

3' Newcastle had their first sight of goal when Lewis Hall’s floated cross from the left was chipped back into the middle by Kieran Trippier, leaving Lammens stranded as the ball dropped and came back off the far post. Noussair Mazraoui’s attempted header clear was cut out by Hall, who cut inside and blazed a right-footed strike over the top.

7' Benjamin Sesko’s back-heel and Fernandes’ lay-off created space for Matheus Cunha on the edge of the box, but the Brazilian’s first-time effort was woeful and he slipped while skewing the shot well wide.

9' Newcastle looked to break at speed as Joelinton slipped Barnes into space down the left. The winger cut inside to play a one-two with Anthony Elanga before firing a first-time shot straight into Casemiro’s outstretched leg.

13' Elanga almost haunted Manchester United. Sandro Tonali’s floated ball into the box was headed half-clear by Leny Yoro and fell to the former Old Trafford product, whose right-footed volley flashed just wide of Lammens’ near post.

'Just wide of the far post'

14'Newcastle went closer still. Joelinton glided away from Fernandes before linking up with Hall to release Tonali down the left. Gordon’s flick to Barnes was curled just wide of the far post by Newcastle’s number 11.

20' Elanga’s high cross from the right was kept alive by Barnes and then Joelinton, who teed up Tonali to drill a first-time strike from 20 yards just wide.

24' Fernandes’ first-time cross was met by Cunha and fell for Sesko, who was crowded out by four Newcastle players and conceded a free-kick for a body-check on Tonali.

41' With possession changing hands at a quick pace, Tonali fired a cross-field pass to Elanga, who drove at the defence and beat Luke Shaw before cutting the ball back to Barnes. Harry Maguire did just enough to block, and the ball deflected into Lammens’ gloves.

42' Sesko and Mbeumo combined down the right before Kobbie Mainoo’s first-time curler from the edge of the box was clawed out of the top corner by a flying Ramsdale.

45' Cunha glided through the Newcastle defence and saw his shot parried by Ramsdale. The loose ball fell to Mbeumo, but he fired over from close range.

60' Fernandes threaded a superb pass to Mbeumo, but his cutback was blocked by Malick Thiaw before he scooped the rebound over.

65' Tonali’s free-kick from the right whipped through the crowd and took a nick behind for a corner, despite Newcastle appeals for a penalty.

66' Gordon almost connected cleanly with Tonali’s curling cross but skewed his finish wide.

70' Mazraoui’s effort was blocked by Thiaw after Fernandes had created the opening.

75' Ramsdale denied United again as Yoro’s header from close range was beaten away.

76' Ugarte’s looping header landed on top of the Newcastle net.

82' Fernandes met Cunha’s cutback with a first-time effort but failed to find the top-right corner.

84' Cunha’s attempt at the far post was blocked by Trippier and went behind for a goal-kick.

88' Sesko’s left-footed shot was blocked by Dan Burn after neat link-up play with Joshua Zirkzee.

89' Zirkzee’s powerful 25-yard strike was tipped over the crossbar by a retreating Ramsdale at full stretch.
